6×8 Bathroom Layouts

A 6×8 bathroom is 48 sq ft (72″ × 96″). 3 of 4 standard layouts pass code clearances at this size. With a tub or a 30″-wide shower on the short wall, the widest vanity that keeps the toilet legal is 36″ (the plans default to 30″ for more elbow room). Putting the tub on the long wall does not work here — see Plan D for why and how to fix it.

Questions about 6×8 bathrooms

Is a 6×8 bathroom big enough for a walk-in shower?

Yes. A 30″ × 72″ walk-in shower fits on the 6′ wall in place of a tub (Plan B), and the toilet and a 30″ vanity still keep their clearances.

What's the largest vanity for a 6×8 bathroom?

36″ with a tub or 60″ shower on the short wall, and 30″ with a 36″ corner shower. At those widths the toilet sits at the 15″ code minimum on each side. Our plans show 30″ and 24″ by default, which leaves a more comfortable 18″ when the room allows it.

Can a 6×8 bathroom have a bathtub?

Yes. A standard tub fits across the 6′ wall with the toilet and vanity beside it on one plumbing wall (Plan A).

Which door works best in a 6×8 bathroom?

An in-swing door works in Plan A, Plan B, Plan C at this size. A pocket door frees the swing area and needs about 30″ of plain wall beside the opening; an out-swing door needs the same clearance in the hallway.
