How we check plans
Every layout on FitsTheRoom is generated from measurements, not drawn by hand, so the same rules apply to every room size — including the exact size you type in.
1. Typical fixture sizes
Plans use common US fixture dimensions:
- Alcove tub: 30″ deep, 60″, 66″, 72″ long (the longest that fits the wall).
- Walk-in shower pan: 30″ deep, 60″ or 72″ long. Corner shower: 36″ × 36″.
- Elongated toilet: 20″ wide, 28″ from the wall to the front of the bowl, 12″ rough-in.
- Vanity: 21″ deep, standard widths 18″, 24″, 30″, 36″, 42″, 48″, 60″, 72″.
- Half baths: round-front toilet 26″ deep (it saves 2″ over an elongated bowl), 18″ × 14″ wall-hung sink, or a vanity 18″ deep and 24″, 30″, 36″ wide.
- Door: 30″ wide, in-swing, out-swing or pocket.
2. Clearance checks
Each plan is checked against the minimums on our clearance rules page: toilet spacing, clear floor in front of the toilet, vanity and shower, shower size and opening, and whether the door swing hits a fixture.
3. Rough-in positions
Drain and valve positions follow from where each fixture sits. Heights are typical values; always use the spec sheet of the exact fixture you buy.
Limits
Walls are treated as finished surfaces and rooms as rectangles. Windows, radiators, sloped ceilings and local code amendments are not modeled. Use the plans to choose a layout, then confirm details with your contractor and building department.
